The disclosure relates to methods and systems for the analysis of compounds in a crystalline state and/or undergoing crystallization. Two-dimensional correlation (2DCOS) and co-distribution analysis (2DCDS) analysis plots can be generated and analyzed. Asynchronous plots can aid in establishing a sequential order of events. Positive cross peaks that correlate with auto peaks associated with aggregation can be identified. The auto peaks can be referenced to quickly discern the regions of the molecule most perturbed, which would indicate a driver for the crystallization state of the molecule. One can define which functional group types (e.g., region) are most perturbed (positive, intense auto peak) and observe how the different auto peaks begin to have greatest intensity change. These changes in auto peaks in the synchronous plots for the different stages of crystallization can provide information as to the dynamics of the process from amorphous to crystalline state.

A method for producing a waveguide including a germanium-based core and a cladding is provided, the method including a step of “low temperature” depositing of a shell after forming the core by engraving, such that the deposition temperature is less than 780° C., followed by a step of “high temperature” depositing of a thick encapsulation layer. The shell and the encapsulation layer at least partially form the cladding of the waveguide. Optionally, a step of annealing under hydrogen at a “low temperature”, less than 750° C., precedes the deposition of the shell. These “low temperature” annealing and depositing steps advantageously make it possible to avoid a post-engraving alteration of the free surfaces of the core during the forming of the cladding which is less germanium-rich.

Internal combustion engines tolerant to tar-containing producer gas are disclosed. Two concepts are described. The engines are tolerant to producer gas from a biomass gasifier with minimal pretreatment. When biomass is gasified to be burned for power generation or to be used to synthesize chemicals such as biofuels, a large fraction of the installation cost is spent on equipment to clean up the heavy organic components (also referred to as ‘tars’) from the gas stream, hereafter referred to as ‘producer gas’. The invention described herein may be used to enable power generation from gasified biomass with minimal treatment. It may also be used to treat biomass at a very low cost for other uses such as synthesizing chemicals. The producer gas is not necessarily limited to biomass derived. Producer gas derived from coal or other sources has similar issues and the invention described herein would be equally applicable.

The activated carbon and the hot process gas are conjointly cooled. The adsorption process during the conjoined cooling has the result that tar from the hot process gas is absorbed on the activated carbon in the cooling zone. A pure gas which is substantially tar-free is obtained. The tar-enriched activated carbon may be at least partly burned for heating the heating zone and/or the gasification zone.
