Linear movement direction of the stage and the actual deflection direction of the electron beam deflected by the first command signal for deflecting the electron beam in the linear movement direction of the stage do not necessarily align with each other for reasons such as the disposition precision of the stage driving device, a lens system, and the deflecting device. Therefore, the first command signal output from the first command device is processed based on the angle between the linear movement direction of the stage driven by the stage driving device and the deflection direction of the electron beam deflected by the first command signal so that the deflection direction of the electron beam aligns with the linear movement direction of the stage. With this processed first command signal, the deflection direction of the electron beam can be changed (rotated) to align with the linear movement direction of the stage.

An improved method of cutting a helical gear sector onto a pivoting arm of a casement window is disclosed. The method includes beginning with a pre-hardened flat sheet of steel stock and cutting the arm and the helical gear sector of the arm in two steps. The non-toothed portions of the arm are cut with a laser and nitrogen assist or shielding gas to prevent any oxidation to the non-toothed portions of the structure. By forming MOSFETs on a substrate having pre-existing ridges of semiconductor material (i.e., a “corrugated substrate”), the resolution limitations associated with conventional semiconductor manufacturing processes can be overcome, and high-performance, low-power transistors can be reliably and repeatably produced. Forming a corrugated substrate prior to actual device formation allows the ridges on the corrugated substrate to be created using high precision techniques that are not ordinarily suitable for device production. MOSFETs that subsequently incorporate the high-precision ridges into their channel regions will typically exhibit much more precise and less variable performance than similar MOSFETs formed using optical lithography-based techniques that cannot provide the same degree of patterning accuracy. A multi step epitaxial process can be used to extend the ridges with different dopant types, high mobility semiconductor, and or advanced multi-layer strutures. For CMOS integrated circuits a capping layer is formed over the a first region. Epitaxial layers are formed in a second region. Then the capping layer is removed from the first region and a capping layer is formed over the second region. Epitaxial layers can than be formed in the first region.

A method for determining the presence of an analyte in a sample includes: contacting a sample with a first portion of a top surface of a substrate that binds the analyte, the top surface of the substrate having an anisotropic topography; viewing the substrate through polarized light in the absence of a liquid crystal after it has been contacted with the sample; and determining whether the analyte is present in the sample by ascertaining whether the first portion of the top surface that was contacted with the sample appears different than it did before it was contacted with the sample. The wavelength of the polarized light is larger than the anisotropic topography of the top surface of the substrate. A difference in the appearance of the first portion of the top surface before and after contact with the sample indicates the presence of the analyte in the sample.

The present invention relates to a chromatography column that removes the longitudinal load from the column tube altogether and transfers it to a yoke and stanchion arrangement situated around but external to the column tube. By using the yoke/stanchion system, the central adjuster can be used to move the top end into and out of the housing. Thus, when internal pressure is applied to the column, the tube experiences no longitudinal load. Additionally, the yoke and stanchion design allows for complete removal of the end from the tube without cumbersome disassembly. Moreover, the yoke provides a place to retain the end while the tube is being filled, emptied, cleaned or repaired.

The present invention is for novel high performance cross-linkable and cross-linked mixed matrix membranes and the use of such membranes for separations such as for CO2/CH4, H2/CH4 and propylene/propane separations. More specifically, the invention involves the preparation of cross-linkable and cross-linked mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). The cross-linkable MMMs were prepared by incorporating microporous molecular sieves or soluble high surface area microporous polymers (PIMs) as dispersed microporous fillers into a continuous cross-linkable polymer matrix. The cross-linked MMMs were prepared by UV-cross-linking the cross-linkable MMMs containing cross-linkable polymer matrix such as BP-55 polyimide. Pure gas permeation test results demonstrated that both types of MMMs exhibited higher performance for CO2/CH4 and H2/CH4 separations than those of the corresponding cross-linkable and cross-linked pure polymer matrices.

A method of calibrating a metabolic analyzer incorporating an oxygen analyzer and a NDIR carbon dioxide analyzer in the field that does not require the use of gas cylinders containing gases of known concentration is described. In calibrating the CO2 detector, at the time of factory setup, the detector output for a gas of a known concentration is measured and stored in the memory of the metabolic analyzer's microprocessor, as is the detector output voltage when the IR source is dimmed by a known percentage. Subsequently, in the field, CO2 levels in ambient air and cell pressure are measured at two different flow rates through the sample chamber and the IR source is again dimmed by the same percentage as had been used at the time of factory setup. Based upon the resulting readings, both the zeroing and span adjustment factors can be computed.

An exhaust gas sensor for detecting oxygen concentration in exhaust gas is disposed in an exhaust pipe of an internal combustion engine. The sensor including a heater is controlled by a system that includes an electronic control unit. Water vapor contained in the exhaust gas is condensed on the sensor when the exhaust gas temperature is low. If the water condensation occurs while the sensor is heated by the heater, a sensor element may be cracked due to local cooling by the condensed water. To avoid the water condensation, the exhaust gas temperature is raised by retarding ignition timing of the engine for a certain period after the engine is started. After the exhaust gas is heated to a certain level, the sensor is heated. Alternatively, heating of the sensor is prohibited until the exhaust gas temperature becomes to a level at which no water condensation occurs. Thus, the cracking of the sensor element is avoided while making a delay of sensor activation minimal.

A terminal for decoding and presenting encoded realtime and non-realtime interactive program guide (IPG) content including a realtime video portion and a non-realtime guide graphics portion. The terminal includes a demodulator operative to receive and demodulate a modulated signal to provide a transport stream, and a transport demultiplexer coupled to the demodulator and operative to receive and process the transport stream to provide a sequence of transport packets re-timestamped to synchronize encoded realtime content and encoded non-realtime content included therein. At least one video decoder is coupled to the transport demultiplexer and operative to receive and decode the encoded realtime and non-realtime contents to recover the realtime and non-realtime contents for the user interface.

A picker for compact discs is provided on a picker head and includes a finger which pivots relative to the picker head and will move from a retracted position within a guide that enters the opening in a compact disc to an outward extended position. When the finger is pivoted outwardly, a lug on the finger will engage the edge surface of the opening in the compact disc and urge the disc so the opposite side edge of the opening is urged against portions of the guide to securely grip and hold the disc and permit picking one disc at a time. A sensor is utilized for sensing the position of the disc relative to the guide and to provide a signal to an actuator that operates to cause the finger to move to its outwardly extended position.
