A primary reactor for a fuel processor system that employs steam and air to convert a liquid hydrocarbon fuel into a hydrogen-rich gas stream. The liquid fuel and an air-steam mixture are mixed in a mixing region within the reactor. The fuel mixture is then directed through an electrically heated catalyst region that heats the mixture to the operation temperature of a light-off catalyst at system start-up. The heated fuel mixture is then directed through a light-off catalyst monolith where the hydrocarbon fuel is dissociated. Once the fuel mixture is heated to the operating temperature of the light-off catalyst, the electrically heated catalyst region is turned off because the exothermic reaction in the light-off catalyst monolith generates the heat necessary to sustain the catalytic reaction.

Methods are disclosed to design resilient hydrofoils (164) which are capable of having substantially similar large scale blade deflections under significantly varying loads. The methods permit the hydrofoil (164) to experience significantly large-scale deflections to a significantly reduced angle of attack under a relatively light load while avoiding excessive degrees of deflection under increased loading conditions. A predetermined compression range on the lee portion of said hydrofoil (164) permits the hydrofoil (164) to deflect to a predetermined reduced angle of attack with significantly low bending resistance. This predetermined compression range is significantly used up during the deflection to the predetermined angle of attack in an amount effective to create a sufficiently large leeward shift in the neutral bending surface with the load bearing portions of the hydrofoil (164) to permit the hydrofoil (164) to experience a significantly large increase in bending resistance as increased loads deflect the hydrofoil (164) beyond the predetermined reduced angle of attack. The shift in the neutral bending surface causes a significant increase in the elongation range required along an attacking portion of the hydrofoil (164) after the predetermined angle of attack is exceed. Methods are also disclosed for designing the hydrofoil (164) so that it has a natural resonant frequency that is sufficiently close the frequency of the reciprocating strokes used to attain propulsion in an amount sufficient to create harmonic wave addition that creates an amplified oscillation in the free end of the reciprocating hydrofoil (164).

In a direct fuel injection diesel engine equipped with a pentroof-shaped piston, a collision angle (α) at which fuel injected in a direction in which the height of the top face of a piston (13) is high collides with a cavity (25) is set larger than a collision angle (β) at which fuel injected in a direction in which the height of the top face of the piston (13) is low collides with the cavity (25). By so doing, in a direction in which the height of the top face is high fuel that has collided with the cavity (25) easily rebounds upward, thus achieving effective combustion by mixing with a large amount of air present in the vicinity of the opening of the cavity (25) where the height is high, and in a direction in which the height of the top face is low it is difficult for fuel that has collided with the cavity (25) to rebound upward, thus achieving effective combustion by suppressing the flowing out of fuel or flame from the opening of the cavity (25) where the height is low, thereby appropriately mixing fuel and air in all directions in the circumferential direction of the cavity and making it possible to improve the engine output and reduce harmful exhaust substances.

After an engine automatic stop processing is started, a diagnosis of a starter is started at a time of t1 when an engine speed drops to a diagnosis starting speed. Before the engine speed drops to the lower limit speed at which an engine can be restarted without being cranked by the starter, the diagnosis of the starter is conducted. In the diagnosis of the starter, it is determined whether the starter is faulty based on a current passing through the starter when a relay is turned off to stop energization of the starter before the starter actually rotates after the relay is turned on. Thereby, a malfunction of the starter can be detected before the engine is automatically stopped. It is avoided to automatically stop the engine which is incapable of being automatically restarted due to the malfunction of the starter.

The design of nonblocking linked data structures using single-location synchronization primitives such as compare-and-swap (CAS) is a complex affair that often requires severe restrictions on the way pointers are used. One way to address this problem is to provide stronger synchronization operations, for example, ones that atomically modify one memory location while simultaneously verifying the contents of others. We provide a simple and highly efficient nonblocking implementation of such an operation: an atomic k-word-compare single-swap operation (KCSS). Our implementation is obstruction-free. As a result, it is highly efficient in the uncontended case and relies on contention management mechanisms in the contended cases. It allows linked data structure manipulation without the complexity and restrictions of other solutions. Additionally, as a building block of some implementations of our techniques, we have developed the first nonblocking software implementation of load-linked/store-conditional that does not severely restrict word size.

A solution to failover processing for automatic responder in a mixed server environment. The instant response system is part of mail delivery system without requiring every server in the cluster to be upgraded to the latest version. The auto-responder is installed in the router, as part of the mail delivery. In order to process messages delivered to the older version of servers seamlessly, the invention comprises an agent trigger which runs only on server start, an agent with a new type in the user mail file, which performs Out of Office functionality (similar to the current mail template functionality) or “failover” agent. The router processing for auto responder will enable the agent in the user mail file when it becomes activated (based on user specified configuration). The agent does not require any special security configuration because it is signed by the server. The email comes from the mail owner (intended recipient) setting the “Principal” field. The router auto responder processing marks each email it auto-responds (this happens before the email is written down to the user mail box, so this special marking does not require any additional I/O). It also stamps out of office profile document with date it performed the processing.

When the degree of separation of an actual charging pressure from a target charging pressure in the supercharger is les than a predetermined value, the correction limiting/inhibiting section limits or inhibits correction of the throttle opening degree in accordance with the atmospheric pressure correction value.

A method of distribution braking between the brakes of an aircraft. The method includes a first step of estimating a braking force objective and a steering torque objective to be achieved by the brakes of the aircraft. It also includes the steps of defining at least two groups of brakes (12, 13) and determining, for each group, a braking level that is to be achieved by the group. The braking levels being calculated in such a manner that braking performed in application of the braking levels is, at least under normal operating conditions of the brakes, in compliance with a braking force objective and with a steering torque objective.

An imaging apparatus mounted on a vehicle and imaging a vicinity of the vehicle, includes a photographic lens, an image pickup device, an accident detection sensor, an image processing section, and a recording section. The image pickup device generates an image signal by performing photoelectric conversion of an object image based on a light flux from the photographic lens. The accident detection sensor detects an accident occurrence based on a shock to the vehicle. The image processing section generates first accident image data and second accident image data which photograph the same accident situation at an accident occurrence, based on the image signal. The recording section records the first accident image data and the second accident image data in different states of security levels regarding data credibility, respectively.

Compliant mechanisms whose dominant modes of vibration match the desired kinematics for locomotion in a given environment are used to mimic motions of a living animal. Mechanisms are simple and mechanically robust. They may have as few as one actuator, which excites the compliant portion to vibrate in a natural mode that results in motion that mimics a living animal. Additional actuators may drive directional elements such as flippers. Models for compliant mechanism bodies were derived and used to identify actuator, material, and geometrical properties of the required mechanisms. The design and fabrication techniques of mechanisms implementing these ideas is also presented. Experiments found that important features of fish-swimming kinematics can be captured qualitatively by compliant mechanisms. The resulting mechanism swimming performance was ⅓ of the real fish performance, comparable to current robotic fish. A compliant mechanism approach to biomimetic locomotion has significant advantages since mechanisms are simpler and more robust than traditional mechanisms used for biomimetic robots and performance achieved is comparable. Radio control is straightforward. The flexible material may be uniform, but need not be. Active materials, such as piezoelectric materials may be used to change the stiffness or other mechanical properties of the flexible portion. The material may be distributed uniformly or non-uniformly. The tail portion may be tapered or uniform or variable cross-section.
