A syntactic metal foam composite that is substantially fully dense except for syntactic porosity is formed from a mixture of ceramic microballoons and matrix forming metal. The ceramic microballoons have a uniaxial crush strength and a much higher omniaxial crush strength. The mixture is continuously constrained while it is consolidated. The constraining force is less than the omniaxial crush strength. The substantially fully dense syntactic metal foam composite is then constrained and deformation worked at a substantially constant volume. The deformation working is typically performed at a yield strength that is adjusted by way of selecting a working temperature at which the yield strength is approximately less than the omniaxial crush strength of the included ceramic microballoons. This deformation causes at least work hardening and grain refinement in the matrix metal.

A locking mechanism for a shaft provides secure frictional engagement to the shaft while manually operable to be removed from the shaft. There is a first cylinder allowable to slide freely on the shaft. One or more holes retaining one or more balls allow a projection of the balls into an interior of the first cylinder. A tensioning ring (second cylinder) partially overlaps the first cylinder, retains the balls within the holes, and has at least a portion of the inside diameter increasing in diameter. A biasing mechanism acts against the second cylinder to urge the balls into the first cylinder interior to frictionally engage the shaft. Two release mechanisms movable with the biasing mechanism manually actuated against the bias move the second cylinder to allow the balls to freely move within the holes and the locking mechanism to be slid onto and removed from the shaft.

Presented here are new processing techniques for optical coherence tomography (OCT) data that allow for improved visualization and use of full-range OCT images. These techniques minimize the central line artifact and the complex conjugate artifact without requiring additional system hardware or significantly increasing post-processing time. The complex conjugate artifact is minimized by segmentation of a layer or layers that cross the zero-delay position, and in some embodiments by further segmentation of other surfaces based on the segmentation of the initial layer or layers. The segmentation information is then used to selectively attenuate the complex conjugate image. It may also be used for other purposes, such as dewarping.

A sound pressure assessment system determines sounds to be presented by referring to a database retaining data of sounds, each of which is a pure tone. The system presents the determined sound as a first sound, and in a predetermined time after presenting the first sound, presents as a second sound a sound at least having the same frequency and the same sound pressure level as those of the first sound to the user. The system extracts an amount of change from an N1 component in response to the first sound to that in response to the second sound. The N1 components are negative components of an user's event-related potential based on points of presenting the first and second sounds as respective starting points. The system determines whether the sound pressure level of the presented sound is excessive to the user, based on the amount of change.

A user is given the ability to control the display of content items such as advertisements, by for example skipping over content items that are not of interest. Metadata tags associated with non-skipped viewings of content are stored and tracked. Subsequently, candidate content items are scored according to their metadata tags, giving higher scores to candidate content items associated with higher occurrences of non-skipped viewings. The higher-scoring candidate content items can then be favored over other candidate content items. Thus, based on the choices the user makes with respect to skipping or not skipping particular content items, inferences are made as to the user's level of interest in various subjects, and subsequent content items are delivered in a personalized manner to the user.

In general, techniques are described for performing customer bandwidth profiling in computer networks. A network device intermediately positioned in a service provider network between a customer network and a centralized network device that provides a hierarchical arrangement of virtual local area networks (VLANs) located in the service provider network may perform the techniques. The network device determines a service profile based on authentication messages and associates the service profile with the hierarchical arrangement of VLANs used for delivering the traffic to and from the customer network and the service provider network. The service profile defines constraints on delivery of the traffic associated with the one or more services. The network device then applies the service profile to the traffic received via the associated hierarchical arrangement of VLANs to enforce the constraints on the delivery of the traffic received via the associated hierarchical arrangement of VLANs.

A transactional memory (TM) receives a lookup command across a bus from a processor. The command includes a base address, a starting bit position, and a mask size. In response to the lookup command, the TM pulls an input value (IV). The TM uses the starting bit position and the mask size to select a portion of the IV. A first sub-portion of the portion of the IV and the base address are summed to generate a memory address. The memory address is used to read a word containing multiple result values (RVs) from memory. One RV from the word is selected using a multiplexing circuit and a second sub-portion of the portion of the IV. If the selected RV is a final value, then lookup operation is complete and the TM sends the RV to the processor, otherwise the TM performs another lookup operation based upon the selected RV.
