Abstract: An ignition coil for an internal combustion engine is provided which is equipped with a high-voltage connector terminal and a high-voltage output terminal. The high-voltage connector terminal is connected to a secondary coil. The high-voltage output terminal is to be joined to a spark plug. The high-voltage connector terminal has a tip portion with a rounded surface which elastically establishes an electrical contact with the surface of the high-voltage output terminal. The rounded surface serves to minimize the wear of the high-voltage connector terminal and the high-voltage output terminal which arises from rubbing therebetween during assembling or operation of the ignition coil, thus avoiding the adhesion of foreign objects to the contact surfaces and ensuring the stability of electric communication between the high-voltage connector terminal and the high-voltage output terminal.

Abstract: A spark plug for an internal combustion engine is provided which includes a housing, a porcelain insulator, a center electrode, and an annular ground electrode. The housing has a small-diameter portion which has a smaller inner diameter and defines a front end thereof. The ground electrode is secured to a front end surface of the small-diameter portion and forms a spark gap between itself and an outer periphery of the center electrode. A pocket is formed between the inner periphery of the housing and a portion of the porcelain insulator which is located closer to a front end of the porcelain insulator than the mounting shoulder is. An air vent extends from outside the ground electrode in a radial direction of the spark plug to the pocket to establish communication between the pocket and the combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine.

Abstract: The disclosure herein relates to an electric power converter in which a power module accommodating a switching element for electric power conversion is in contact with a cooler, and provides a structure capable of effectively cooling the power module. An electric power converter includes coolers in contact with a power module. A stacked body of the power module and the coolers is accommodated in a case. The surface of the first cooler opposite to the power module is in contact with the case, and an output bus bar is connected to a midpoint terminal and is in contact with the case. The first cooler directly cools the power module by one surface, and absorbs heat from the power module transferred via the midpoint terminal and the output bus bar by another surface.

Abstract: A failure prediction system disclosed herein is configured to predict a failure of a power converter which converts output power of a power source to power for driving a traction motor. The system may include: a sensor provided at the power converter; and a controller configured to predict a failure of the power converter based on a measurement value of the sensor. The controller may be configured to: calculate a difference between previous and present measurement values of the sensor, wherein the controller repeatedly calculates the difference at predetermined time intervals; obtain intermediate data by applying variable conversion to a plurality of the past differences; calculate a damage level of the power converter based on the intermediate data; and output a warning signal in a case where the damage level exceeds a damage threshold, wherein the warning signal indicates that a timing when the failure occurs is approaching.

Abstract: A spark plug has a central electrode and a ground electrode. The central electrode has an electrode base material part and a noble metal chip of a cylindrical shape and is welded on the electrode base material part. A spark discharge is generated between the noble metal chip of the central electrode and the ground electrode when supplying a predetermined voltage to the spark plug. An intermediate region is formed on an overall surface between the electrode base material part and the noble metal chip. The intermediate region has a primary measurement part and a secondary measurement part. Components of the noble metal chip in the primary measurement area have a first average ratio of not less than 40 wt %, and components of the noble metal chip in the secondary measurement area have a second average ratio of not more than 80 wt %.

Abstract: A control apparatus, which is for an internal combustion engine with a spark plug having a center electrode and a ground electrode disposed so as to form a spark discharge gap therebetween, includes a voltage applying section for applying a voltage to the spark discharge gap, a constant-voltage path including a constant-voltage element parallel-connected to the spark discharge gap of the spark plug for preventing the spark discharge gap from being applied with a voltage higher than a set voltage, and an operation control circuit for controlling an operating condition of the internal combustion engine. The operation control circuit is configured to measure a current-flowing time during which a current flows through the constant-voltage path when a voltage higher than the set voltage is applied to the constant-voltage path, and change the operating condition of the internal combustion engine in accordance with the measured current-flowing time.

Abstract: A spark plug includes a tubular housing, a tubular insulator, a center electrode, a ground electrode, a resistor, and a stem. The insulator is supported inside the housing. The center electrode is supported inside the insulator so as a distal end portion thereof protrudes. The ground electrode forms a spark discharge gap G between the ground electrode and the center electrode. The resistor is supported inside the insulator at a proximal side of the central electrode. The stem is supported inside of the insulator at a proximal side of the resistor. Of an outer peripheral surface of the insulator, and closer to a distal end side than a proximal portion of the resistor is, there is formed a high emissivity surface of which thermal emissivity is at least 0.7 on at least a part of a portion facing an inner circumferential surface of the housing.
