Abstract: A system and method for hydraulic isolation of a downhole powered system. The system and method include a sliding sleeve, venting assemblies with venting ports, and check valves associated with a vent body, and an isolation sleeve, isolation valve, and integral packer for controlling fluid flow through the motor and pump assembly of the powered system. Also disclosed is a wet connect mandrel modified to receive the isolation sleeve, the isolation sleeve preferably capable of permitting the passage of tools therethrough and capable of preventing fluid through the inlet of the mandrel. The mandrel may also be outfitted with a built-in sliding sleeve. The sleeves, valves and packer can be actuated mechanically, hydraulically or electrically. Electrical actuation can be facilitated using the power from an adjacent wet connect mandrel.

Abstract: A stress cone for reducing electrical stresses is disclosed for use on terminated ends of tubing encapsulated power cable used in surface applications in a subsurface well power system employing electric submersible pumps (ESPs). The stress cone comprises an annular section about a longitudinal axis for receiving a terminated end of the TEPC in its first end and for abutting the terminated metal TEPC end against a metal shoulder at its second end therein, and an insulation chamber axially aligned with and connected to the annular section. The chamber comprises a metal interior surface symmetrical about the axis. The insulated TEPC core (without outer metal sheath) passes through the insulation chamber along the axis and then exits. The ID of the TEPC metal sheath and the inside metal surface of the chamber form a smooth ground plane transition surface. Insulation material surrounds the TEPC insulation layer within the insulation chamber.

Abstract: Disclosed are methods and devices for testing downhole connector electrical systems and cable integrity during installation of a permanent completion, including a customized retrievable plug arm assembly connectable to the completion during RIH, the tool mimicking a retrievable ESP, but without motor, and can be employed with or without pressure isolation. Another method employs a slidable starpoint located within the downhole wet mate connector of the completion to provide continuous electrical contact between the phases when no retrievable assembly is in place. When a retrievable assembly is later put in place, the slidable starpoint is moved into a second position that no longer provides electrical contact between the phases. Another method uses fusible links installed between two conductors within the downhole electrical connector system of the completion to provide similar electrical contact between phases, the fusible link configured to melt away once motor current is sent through the conductors.

Abstract: A permanent completion system is disclosed comprising: an upper ACP installed in the wellbore powered by a first power cable from the surface; a lower ACP installed in the wellbore below the upper ACP, and being powered by a second power cable from the surface and being connected to the upper APC by a spacer tube; and a heating assembly connected to the lower ACP in the wellbore and receiving power from the second power cable, the heating assembly, such as a mineral insulated heater cable, providing heat to the wellbore. The heating assembly preferably is retrievable and can be conveyed to the lower ACP by coil tubing. The coil tubing can be removed after conveying the heating assembly into place to permit further access to the upper ACP, e.g., to permit mechanical and electrical connection of a retrievable ESP assembly to the upper ACP.

Abstract: A system and method for deploying a reverse Y-tool are provided. The system and method may include a first tubing branch in line with production tubing and a second tubing branch offset from the first tubing branch. The Y-tool system may also have a retrievable Electric Submersible Pump (ESP) and an orienting whipstock deployed in the first tubing branch. The orienting whipstock may direct other wellbore components to the second tubing branch. The radius of the second tubing branch is less than a radius of the first tubing branch. A reverse Y-tool mandrel is also provided that includes an upper head comprising an upper connection to production tubing, a middle body comprising a discriminating section profile, and a bottom section comprising a lower connection to production tubing and a lower connection to bypass tubing.
