The present invention is based on the discovery of NAD+ and NADP+ mediator compounds that do not bind irreversibly to thiol groups in the active sites of intracellular dehydrogenase enzymes. Such mediator compounds avoid a common mode of enzyme inhibition. The mediators can therefore increase the stability and reliability of the electrical response in amperometric electrodes constructed from NAD- or NADP-dependent enzymes.

The unique arrangement of the vessel and opposing pairs of first and second electrode surfaces provides for a substantially uniform voltage field around a perimeter of the vessel and an effective voltage field for coalescence within a center of the vessel. A circular-shaped distributor pipe or a distributor housing serves to absorb momentum of the incoming emulsion stream and distribute the stream into an interior of the vessel.

In a coal gasification furnace adapted to feed pulverized coal thereinto by the use of inert carrier gas and gasify the same, any startup burner can be unnecessitated thereby eliminating any startup combustion chamber. Further, even in the use of a startup burner, it is smaller and lighter in weight than conventional startup burners, allowing the startup combustion chamber to be compact and limiting the height of the entirety of the gasification furnace. As a characteristic feature, a pulverized coal fuel supply passageway (23) to a combustor burner (9) is provided at its midstream portion with a startup gas supply passageway (29) for supply of a startup combustible gas (NG1). After reaching of the temperature of the furnace interior to a first temperature (T1) allowing ignition of pulverized coal with reference to a detected value from furnace interior temperature detecting means (41), transition to combustion by the pulverized coal and carrier gas is effected by increasing the input rate of pulverized coal and carrier gas while decreasing the supply rate of combustible gas (NG1) from the startup gas supply passageway (29).

Gain is adjusted automatically in ultrasound imaging. The average of signals regardless of type of reflector (e.g., tissue or fluid) is determined, such as from all data in a frame of data representing a scanned region. The gain is set based on the difference between the average and the target. The gain offset is used with or without other gain limitations for analog, digital, or both analog and digital amplifiers. There is described a method with which, on the basis of a three-dimensional recording of a component to be reworked, its surface configuration can be determined and stored temporarily so that, after it has been coated, it can be produced in its original surface form, or in its surface form then required, in certain regions, i.e. locally in the area of film-cooling openings. An especially precise and quick three-dimensional recording can be achieved by the use of the triangulation method. In this case, a reference pattern depicted on the component by a projector is recorded by two camera arranged at an angle. From the images from the cameras, the coordinates describing the surface three-dimensionally can then be determined by a control system using the triangulation method.

A control system and method of controlling a propeller aircraft engine during takeoff limits the amount of engine power developed at the very beginning of the takeoff in order to maximize thrust and minimize rollout distances. The control system limits the amount of power developed by the engine, even in the face of a nominal demand by the pilot for maximum engine power. Instead, the control system provides something significantly less than full power at the beginning of takeoff and gradually increases the power developed by the engine to full power as the airspeed increases. This gradual increase from partial engine power toward full power helps prevent stalling of the propeller, thereby maximizing the effectiveness of the propeller and engine in assisting the aircraft to takeoff quickly. The control system is particularly helpful for taking off from high-altitude runways.

Standard 0.15 ounce lip balm tubes have a knurled twist base that inadvertently rotates in your jacket or pants pocket while people are engaged in outdoor activities such as walking, working, biking, hiking, hunting or fishing. As the tube base twists inside your pocket, the balm itself is wormed outward and mashed into the cap, creating a gooey mess. Also, standard lip balm tube caps come off easily in your pocket which is another big messy problem. The newly invented dispenser prevents a gooey mess in your pocket, purse, jacket or luggage.

When a wastegate valve, which opens and closes an exhaust bypass passage bypassing an exhaust turbine, is open, exhaust gases of respective cylinders bypass the exhaust turbine and pass a sensing point of an air-fuel ratio sensor downstream of the exhaust turbine. Accordingly, the exhaust gases of the respective cylinders can be avoided from being mixed by the exhaust turbine, so an influence of an inter-cylinder variation in an air-fuel ratio due to an inter-cylinder imbalance abnormality becomes apt to appear in an output waveform of the air-fuel ratio sensor. Therefore, existence or nonexistence of the inter-cylinder imbalance abnormality is determined based on the output of the air-fuel ratio sensor when the wastegate valve is open. Eventually, the existence or nonexistence of the inter-cylinder imbalance abnormality can be determined accurately, thereby improving detection accuracy of the inter-cylinder imbalance abnormality.

A rolling mill stand for production of rolled strip or sheet metal has working rolls which are supported on supporting rolls or on intermediate rolls and supporting rolls. The working rolls and/or intermediate rolls are arranged in the rolling mill stand so as to be displaceable axially with respect to one another. Each working and/or intermediate roll has a curved barrel contour which runs over the entire effective barrel length and can be described by a trigonometric function. The two barrel contours of adjacent rolls complete one another in a complementary way, in the unloaded state, solely in one specific relative axial position of the rolls of the pair of rolls, so that inhomogeneities in the load distribution along the contact line of two adjacent rolls are to be minimized. For this purpose, the supporting rolls have a complementary barrel contour, and a partial or full completion of the barrel contours of the supporting rolls and of the directly adjacent working rolls or intermediate rolls occurs in the unloaded state.
