Techniques are provided for use by a pacemaker or other implantable medical device for detecting and tracking trends in cardiopulmonary fluid transfer rates—such as heart-to-lung fluid perfusion rates and lung-to-lymphatic system fluid excretion rates—and for detecting heart failure, dyspnea or other cardiopulmonary conditions. In one example, the device periodically measures transthoracic admittance values. A first exponential time-constant (k1) is determined using curve-fitting from admittance values obtained while the patient is in a sleep posture. Time-constant k1 is representative of the fluid perfusion rate. A second exponential time-constant (k2) is determined based on admittance values obtained while the patient is standing/walking/sitting. The second exponential time-constant (k2) is representative of the fluid excretion rate from the lungs. The device then detects trends, if any, in the time-constants (or in “DC” baseline values) to detect or predict medical conditions such as an imminent heart failure exacerbation.

An engine rotational speed control apparatus is provide to prevent a degradation of fuel efficiency caused by an unnecessary increase of the rotational speed of an engine when a depression amount of an accelerator pedal is briefly increased and then immediately decreased. In particular, when the vehicle is accelerated, an optimum fuel efficiency operating point along an optimum fuel efficiency curve is not moved immediately to another optimum fuel efficiency operating point corresponding to a new target drive force. Instead, the target drive force is reached by increasing the engine load while increasing the engine rotational speed as little as possible, and thus using an operating point that does not lie on the optimum fuel efficiency curve.

When the driver makes a request for switching the shift range to the P range despite that the vehicle has not yet stopped completely, the wheel cylinder pressure is maintained at a brake hold pressure Ph for a while, rather than switching the shift range to the P range immediately. At this time, more specifically, the wheel cylinder pressure is maintained at the brake hold pressure Ph for a brake hold duration Δt within which the vehicle is estimated to stop, and when the brake hold duration Δt has passed, the shift range is switched to the P range. After the lock mechanism is actuated to establish the P range, the wheel cylinder pressure is gradually reduced from the brake hold pressure Ph at a given pressure reducing gradient.

Propagation of ultrasound through a porous body saturated with liquid generates electric response. This electro-acoustic effect is called “seismoelectric current”, whereas reverse version, when electric field is driving force, is “electroseismic current”. It is possible to measure seismoelectric current with existing electro-acoustic devices, which had been designed for characterizing liquid dispersions. Such versatility allows calibration of said devise using dispersion and then applying it for characterizing porous body. In general, magnitude of seismoelectric current depends on porosity, pore size, zeta potential of pore surfaces and elastic properties of matrix. It is possible to adjust conductivity of liquid for simplifying these dependences. For instance, liquid with high ionic strength causes double layers become thin comparing to the pore size, which eliminates dependence of said currents on pore size. We suggest using such case for characterizing porosity. Magnitude of the said currents is proportional to zeta potential. This parameter can be calculated when porosity is known. In contrary, saturation of porous body with low conducting liquid leads to complete overlap of double layers, which can be used for characterizing pore size. Phase of the said currents can be used for determining iso-electric point because it rotates 180 degrees when liquid composition varies through this point.

A vacuum storage system in a refrigerator includes a bin or drawer unit removably received in a housing. The vacuum storage system may be utilized in a storage configuration or in a vacuum sealing configuration to remove air from one or more food preservation containers having one-way evacuation valves. A switch on a control interface actuates a vacuum source and a front wall of the bin or drawer unit seals against the cabinet. Air is drawn from the storage space via a hose in communication with the vacuum source and air pressure within the storage space is reduced below atmospheric pressure, whereby air is simultaneously evacuated from the containers housed in the storage space. At a predetermined pressure, a control deactivates the vacuum source and an equalizing valve is opened to return the storage space to atmospheric pressure.

A method for supplying fluid to a transmission component such as a transmission control unit, a transmission lubricating system, and/or a transmission cooling system. The transmission is an automatic transmission of a motor vehicle having a hydraulic actuating system. A hydraulic medium is drawn from a region within the interior of a transmission case by a positive displacement pump, and the region of the transmission case from which the positive displacement pump draws the hydraulic medium is subjected to an overpressure that is somewhat greater than the ambient pressure around the transmission case.

The invention relates to a method for producing an especially panel-shaped vacuum insulation element which is wrapped in a film and is filled with a powder. According to the method, the unmolded, loose powder is filled, particularly poured, into the opening of a bag which is formed from a high-barrier film and is open on one side. A filter material that is permeable to air and impermeable to powder dust is fixed to the internal face of the film bag in the area of the opening of the filled film bag such that the interior of the bag is closed in a dust-tight manner while air can still be discharged. The interior of the dust-tightly closed film bag is then evacuated and the evacuated film bag is air-tightly closed in a vacuum.

In a machine for wrapping sticks of chewing gum, sticks of substantially rectangular outline and relatively small thickness advance singly and in succession on a conveyor, arranged flat and spaced apart at a predetermined first pitch, toward a position where they are transferred to a spacing roller revolving tangentially to the conveyor and presenting peripheral seats spaced apart at a pitch greater than the first pitch; the sticks are taken up at the transfer position by a pick-up and transfer mechanism operating between the conveyor and the seats of the spacing roller, describing a trajectory that includes a movement perpendicular to the plane occupied by the sticks and producing a minimal displacement equating approximately to the thickness of a single stick.

A wall-mounted component can be flush-mounted into a wallboard by first installing a panel with a receiver bracket flush into a wallboard. Once the panel is installed, the component can be inserted into the receiver bracket at which point a locking mechanism automatically or manually engages to lock the component into the wall. The locking mechanism is concealed from view so that a casual observer does not see how the component is affixed to the wall, yet is accessible from the wall's exterior for routine service and maintenance, as well as reinstallation of updated components.
