The display unit displays contents indicating that the reading operation is possible when the reading operation of the medium is completed and the medium detecting unit does not detect the medium. The conveying unit starts conveyance of the medium in response to the read-operation starting instruction, when the read-target medium is a first medium in a set of media, and when the medium detecting unit detects the first medium, and the conveying unit starts conveyance of the medium, when the read-target medium is a second or later medium in the set of media, after the medium detecting unit detects the second or later medium.
