The display apparatus comprises a display unit, a backlight module, a light sensor, and a controller. The backlight module is located on a first side of the display unit. The light sensor is located on a second side of the display unit different from the first side. The light sensor faces away from the display unit for detecting light comprising ambient light and reflected light from the display unit and generates a first brightness value. The controller determines the display apparatus malfunction based on the first brightness value.
