One apparatus includes a processor and a transceiver that communicates with a mobile communication network supporting a plurality of application categories. The processor receives a request to send a data packet, wherein the data packet is generated by an application of the apparatus. The processor identifies a network slice selection indicator associated with the application of the apparatus and transmits the data packet via a network connection to a network slice in the mobile communication network, wherein the network connection is associated with the identified network slice selection indicator.
