The invention relates to a projector and a method of controlling the projector. The projector includes: an I/F unit to which an image signal is input; a display unit that displays an image based on the image signal input to the I/F unit; a shift device that changes a position of an image to be displayed by the display unit; a signal processing unit that outputs a driving signal to the shift device and drives the shift device; and a shift control unit that controls the driving signal output by the signal processing unit. The shift control unit changes an output timing of the driving signal to correspond to a change in a frequency of the image signal.
